Samoa Air and the Kiribati airline, Coral Sun Airways, have announced intentions to provide regular weekly flights between the two countries as well as charter services across the Pacific.

The service will operate with a stop at Tuvalu's Funafuti Airport to provide for direct connection from Tuvalu to both Samoa and Kiribati.

Islands Business reports that Tuvalu and Kiribati have been without these direct links for many years.

The new service is expected to start in March, with flights planned to depart Faleolo Airport on a Tuesday, returning on a Friday.

The two airlines intend to further develop their joint services with other regional partners and are evaluating other routes including Niue, Tonga, Fiji and the Northern Cook Islands.

Samoa Air has also applied for a regular service between Samoa and Tonga.

Meanwhile, Coral Sun will be offering charter to Canton Island and Christmas Island as an extension of domestic services within Kiribati.

Coral Sun says there are also options to include flights to the Marshall Islands.
