Vanuatu man gets warning over Australian abuse

4:52 pm on 4 February 2015

Vanuatu's acting director general for Climate Change, Jotham Napat has warned a young man from Emau Island about racist remarks and abusive language.

The man reportedly made remarks during consultations on an environmental impact assessment of a geothermal development project at Takara in North Efate.

The abuse was reportedly directed at Australians and Mr Napat warned Vanuatu has no money and it depends on nations like Australia to help fund the country's development.

He threatened to end the meeting if the man did not stop the abuse.

Local chiefs then stepped in and apologised, allowing the meeting to end peacefully.
