American Samoa's chief procurement officer, John Emil Kruse and his wife Elaine, have been sentenced to home confinement for conversion of federal property.

US District Judge Beryl Howell did not jail the Kruzes, but sentenced both to 4 years probation, 8 months of home confinement and ordered them to pay restitution to the federal government of 399,936 US dollars.

The couple had pleaded guilty in a federal district court in Washington DC, to the conversion of government property allocated to a low income housing scheme.

Federal prosecutors had asked for jail terms for the couple.

They will be allowed to continue working.
