TB levels soar in PNG's Western Province

3:17 pm on 13 February 2015

The Papua New Guinea health minister Michael Malabag says the incidence of tuberculosis is rising rapidly in Western Province putting the whole population at risk.

The Post Courier reports Mr Malabag saying the province has the highest number of cases of drug resistant TB in the country.

He says drug resistant TB is a particularly dangerous form of the disease that is difficult and expensive to treat.

Australia has this week committed tens of millions more dollars to help combat TB and Mr Malabag says an enhanced TB emergency response is also being developed.
