A Suva-based lawyer and Fijian opposition MP, Nikolau Nawaikula, has been suspended from legal practice for two months and fined 1,000 US dollars for professional misconduct.

FBC News reports that between January last year and this year, Mr Nawaikula failed to respond to two complaints lodged against him, and subsequent reminders from the Chief Regsitrar.

Mr Naiwaikula admitted the allegations were correct and expressed remorse, saying he left the matter to a clerk who didn't notify him of the need to respond to the Registrar.

The Commissioner of the Independent Legal Service Commission, Justice Paul Madigan, also ordered that Mr Nawaikula be publicly reprimanded.
