New Zealand has signed an agreement with Cuba to support its medical assistance to Pacific Island countries.

The document was signed on Friday by the acting chief executive of New Zealand's foreign ministry, Craig Hawke, and the Cuban Ambassador to New Zealand, Maria del Carmen Herrera Caseiro.

The two sides described the agreement as an important step in the sustained engagement of relations between the two countries.

Mr Hawke acknowledged Cuba's medical collaboration in the region and the fame it enjoyed in the field of healthcare.
