Australia ships more young children to Nauru

8:39 pm on 17 February 2015

An Australian Greens senator, Sarah Hanson-Young, says the Australian government is still sending children to the Nauru asylum seeker detention camp.

She says Australia sent children, some as young as four, to the camp on Friday and Saturday, just days after the release of a damning report on the abuses they face.

In the report the Australian Human Rights Commission says Canberra's policy of indefinitely detaining children in Nauru is in clear violation of international human rights law.

The report, The Forgotten Children, called for the release of all asylum seeker children detained in Australian or in Christmas Island and Nauru camps for processing.

Senator Hanson-Young says the government's response was to send more children to face abuse on Nauru.

She says it is outrageous behaviour from a government that simply doesn't care about children suffering.
