The police in Samoa have used for the first time the Compulsory Education law against the parents of children found selling goods during school hours.

Police and Ministry of Education officials carried out a spot-check of children not attending school in the last three weeks.

The Ministry says the officials found kids selling goods around Apia and Salelologa town area during school hours.

The parents and guardians of the children caught were approached for an explanation, and a police investigation followed.

The police have finalised five cases against parents and guardians alleged to have breached the requirements of the Compulsory Education law.

The Ministry of Education says the spot checks will continue.
