A Lord in Tonga has been fined about $1,200 USD for possession of a firearm without a license.

Lord Tu'iha'ateiho was found guilty of the charge last year, and was sentenced at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court yesterday.

The current Ha'apai Noble's Representative to Parliament and former Deputy Speaker has been ordered to pay the fine within two-months, or face three-months imprisonment.

Matangi Tonga reports the judge said the defendant is a man of good character and is a first time offender, and he did not believe he was in possession of the firearm for any sinister criminal purpose.
