Fiji prepares as storm intensifies

12:05 pm on 9 March 2015

Fiji is preparing for heavy rain and strong winds later this week as a tropical depression to the northwest near Vanuatu intensifies.

The Fiji Meteorological Service says there is a high probability it will become a cyclone in the next 24 hours.

The depression is slow moving and expected to pass to the southwest of Fiji but from Wednesday to Friday the country can expect heavy rain with possibly strong and gusty northwest winds and squally thunderstorms.

At 8 o'clock this morning Fiji time the depression was situated 13-hundred kilometres northwest of Nadi.
