Fijian golfer Sam Lee is poised to miss the cut at the New Zealand Open after an opening round to forget in Arrowtown.

The 24 year old birdied three consecutive holes between the fifth and seventh, but also managed four bogeys and two double bogeys to finish at five over par, 14 shots off the lead.

Australian golfers David Bransdon and Won Joon Lee are tied at the top after firing matching rounds of 9-under-par 63 at The Hills course.

Meanwhile Vijay Singh has made a bright start to the Valspar Championship PGA Tour event in Florida.

The 52 year-old is in a share of ninth place at two under par, three behind the outright leader Sean O'Hair.
