Ony one ward operating in Vanuatu capital's hospital

Vanuatu's lands minister says only one ward of the country's main Vila Central Hospital is still operational after Cyclone Pam tore damaged much of the hospital.

Ralph Regenvanu says a new wing, which was opened just a few months ago, is the only part of the hospital that's left standing.

He says the roof was blown off most of the other wards by the category five cyclone, and all the hospital's inpatients are staying in the one new wing.

Mr Regenvanu says the hospital urgently needs to be brought back in working order as the relief effort gets underway.

He says temporary emergency centres have been set up.
