About 1,000 applicants have answered a Fiji military recruitment campaign aimed at boosting the number of women in the force.
Land Force Commander Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho says the recruitment comes after a personnel review.

Colonel Qiliho says there is a requirement from the United Nations that 10 percent of troops deployed for peacekeeping missions be made up of females.
He says the force had fallen about 100 women short.
A few years after 1988 we took in more females but after a review we see that we need more females now in order to sustain our operations both in our UN peace-keeping but also here in Fiji. We are looking at taking approximately 100 females for this recruitment and we had an overwhelming response."
Colonel Qiliho says interviews and fitness testing is currently being carried out to vet the applicants.
