Papua New Guinean soldiers have been accused of opening fire in a nightclub in Madang, injuring the wife of one of the performers.

The Seafarers Club is seen as a safe club and eatery, until Saturday night's alleged incident, in which EMTV reports seven shots were fired at the ceiling and also the dance floor area.

EMTV says a police officer has confirmed the incident, while the club manager, Dr Cecelia Kainge, says the club's security guards were not able to carry out safety checks of the soldiers as they were in a rush to enter and guards expected them to behave appropriately.

She says one of the bullets skidded across the floor and lodged in the leg of the wife of the prominent Madang musician, Gedix Atege.

She was reportedly rushed to Madang's Modilon General Hospital.
