An American sprinter has opted to represent Samoa in July's Pacific Games in Port Moresby.

Talamua online reports that Colorado based Jeremy Dodson, whose mother is Samoan from the village of Malie, made his intentions known when he and his grandmother met with the Prime Minister before the Easter break.

Dodson qualified for both the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games and is a trainer for state champions Niwot High School, and other professional athletes.

The Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi acknowledged Dodson's decision as a very important one and he hopes other overseas born and based Samoans will follow his example to represent Samoa.
