The child is being held with her parents in Darwin because of her father's poor health, and the family has been told they will be returned to Nauru once doctors have seen the man.

Immigration spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young says the Minister for Immigration is knowingly tormenting the child by keeping her in detention and threatening to return her to Nauru.

Senator Hanson-Young says medical experts have advised her illness is associated with conditions on Nauru, and sending her back there will cause further harm.

She says the girl has been exposed to horrific scenes inside the Nauru detention camp and has been severely traumatised as a result.
