Papua New Guinea's deputy opposition leader, Sam Basil, says the national government needs to step in to solve problems that spark tribal clashes around the country.
The MP for Bulolo says there are frequent clashes among different tribal groups in squatter settlements in his district, but there is a lack of police resources and the government has to step up.
He says the government and the multi-national firm, Rimbunan Hijau, are joint owners of PNG Forestry Products which operates in the Bulolo area and they could provide land to house people in settlements.
"And the national and the provincial government put in some money and get some negotiators to fix the problem, because we just recently put in some money, about 50,000 [kina] to solve that problem ourselves but the problem is bigger than my district if we think of solving it ourselves," Mr Basil says.
