Security in Papua New Guinea's capital has been strengthened as APEC holds its meeting on women and the economy.

The Post Courier reports surveillance cameras and security scanners were set up at the Laguna Hotel as Government security officials say the event is good practice for the 2018 APEC summit to be held in Port Moresby.

The newspaper reports the systems seemed to work well, as a prominent women leader and a government officer were turned away because they did not have their APEC identification cards.

Chinese representatives and two other officials from foreign countries told the newspaper that security was top class in the city.
