George Pau-Langevin was speaking in Paris after a presidential tour of the Carribbean that included a stop in Cuba.

She has reportedly raised the matter with the visiting French Polynesian president, Edouard Fritch, who also held talks with Mr Hollande.

The last French president to visit Tahiti was Jacques Chirac in 2003.

His successor, Nicolas Sarkozy, was due to visit in 2008, but the trip was first deferred and then cancelled.
