The 87-year-old actress is in Samoa to mark the 61st anniversary and relaunch of the film that is set in the islands.

Ms Haynes says she has fond memories of Samoa.

"For me it was wonderful because then it helped me in my role of Maeva to know what it was like to be Polynesian and Samoa was really untouched in those days. It was a very, very important part of my life."

Meanwhile New Zealand All Black's rugby captain, Richard McCaw, has donated his jersey for the same auction.

An event spokesman says the money will be raised to assist the establishing of an national paraplegia organisation.
