Unlimited banking strike in New Caledonia

11:59 am on 26 May 2015

Bank employees in New Caledonia have begun an unlimited strike to back their demands for higher pay.

The strike is being supported by a majority of the unionised labour force, prompting some branch closures and raising the risk that operations such as salary payments cannot be performed.

According to the public broadcaster, meetings are planned outside banks as part of today's protest.

The employees have been pushing for a two-percent pay rise while the French Banking Federation has offered 0.2 percent.
