Fiji have lost their first ever world cup football match by 8-1 against a powerhouse German side in FIFA Under 20 action in Christchurch.

A rampant first-half performance saw the 1981 winners storm to a six goal lead, although Fiji's fans did have something to cheer about when Iosefo Verevou claimed a consolation goal.

A deep cross in the 48th minute saw Verevou peel away from his marker and head into goal giving him the honour of Fiji's first goal-scorer at a world tournament.

Fiji will hope to pick up their first points against Honduras on Thursday.
