Police in PNG yet to investigate sorcery killing

A brutal murder in the central highlands of Papua New Guinea is still to be investigated as police say they are waiting to charter a plane.

A mother of four, named Misila, was hacked to death with an axe, by a group of men in Fiyawena province two weeks ago, after she was accused of sorcery.

Missionaries and police say the primitive belief in sanguma, or evil spirits, leads villagers to justify the killings.

The head of the provincial administration in Enga, Samson Amean, says they have approved the funding of the plane, but he is still waiting on an invoice from the airline.

"What we are talking about here is thick jungle and it will take some time to reach the place that they'd like to visit. That's why we are doing two charters, one to drop the policemen off, and the doctors to do a post-mortem, and then to pick them up, possible three to four days later."

Samson Amean says he hopes to charter a Twin Otter, so about 10 to 12 policemen can go.
