The disgraced former governor of the Northern Marianas, Benigno Fitial, has begged the court not to jail him, following his guilty verdict for misconduct in public office and conspiracy to commit theft.
Through his lawyer, Fitial has asked if a prison term is given, that it be suspended entirely, on the condition that he pay an appropriate fine, and any restitution for loss to the government which might be proven.
However, the Office of the Public Auditor is recommending a sentence of five years' jail, with a two years non parole period, a fine of $US5,000 dollars and a 10-year ban on employment in the government.

The Chief Prosecutor, Leonardo Rapadas, has recommended a sentence of more than a year in prison.
Fitial pleaded guilty to the charges in May after resigning as governor in February 2013, days after the House of Representatives had impeached him.
The sentencing hearing is next week.
