PNG's Gulf Governor arrested while on bail

The Governor of Papua New Guinea's Gulf Province has been arrested on a new charge of misuse of public funds while out on bail.

Havila Kavo, convicted late last year on a charge of misappropriating 50,000 US dollars of public funds four years ago, was out on bail pending the outcome of his appeal against his 18-month jail sentence.

However, the Post Courier reports that he was brought in to the Boroko police station yesterday, charged with misappropriating 280,000 US dollars of provincial funds in January.

The police command has indicated that an appeal for bail would be unlikely due to the governor's charged offence while on bail for a separate conviction.
