Tavita had been found guilty on five charges of common assault, indecent assault and insulting words as a result of a complaint lodged by a student at the National University of Samoa.

At his sentencing today the defendant was discharged on the assault convictions, but has to meet police costs, and he is on six months probation for the insulting conviction.

Tavita's lawyer told the court the defendant has quit his job at the government newspaper.
