Papua New Guinea's Sports Minister says the presence of 300 soldiers during the upcoming Pacific Games is just a precautionary measure.

Saturday marks the opening ceremony for the games, and Justin Tkatchenko said the country was completely ready for its hosting duties.

He said the Games would showcase and promote the country.

Meanwhile, the Papua New Guinea Defence Force has launched 'Operation Pacific Wantok' - a joint taskforce involving 300 soldiers serving as special constables to help the police.

Justin Tkatchenko said the soldiers would not be armed.

"When people see our security forces unarmed - they are there as a presence to assist anyone if needed," he said.

"They're there to ensure that the movement of people and traffic is all done in an orderly fashion and is as safe as possible."
