Professor Lal's latest appeal to have his immigration ban lifted has been turned down.

The Australia-based scholar says he received notification from the Assistant Director of Immigration on Monday that the status quo remains.

Professor Lal who was expelled in 2009 for speaking out after the 2006 coup says he's been told the continuing ban on his return is because he opposed the return to democracy which he denies.

"Really this is the end of the road. They simply don't listen to reason. There was an enormous amount of appeal in Fiji from all walks of life, people asking the prime minister to rescind the ban. He hasn't done it and so that is where we are at the moment."

Professor Lal says it's petty and vindictive and he can't the see point in mounting a legal challenge.
