The 31-year-old appeared in court in Papeete this morning after he was arrested at the weekend, but the presiding judge, Denise Lacroix Roguet, noticed the absence and released the defendants.

The deputy prosecutor, Michel Bonnieu, arrived soon after, but was too late.

He told local media he was very surprised, but declined to give further comment.

In all, three defendants were released, but will be summoned at another date.
