Fiji reiterates climate migration help to Kiribati

4:26 pm on 14 July 2015

As Kiribati celebrates its 36th anniversary of independence, Fiji has reiterated its support for possible climate change-induced migration.

Fiji has already sold off 20 square kilometres of land on Vanua Levu for Kiribati to cultivate as the country looks to heighten its food security in the wake of king tides and rising sea levels affecting its group of atolls.

Fiji's prime minister Frank Bainimarama told the president of Kiribati Anote Tong his people should not fear being climate change refugees, and Fiji's doors are open.

Mr Bainimarama also said he was standing with Kiribati in demanding binding cuts in carbon emissions from industrialised nations at the forthcoming World Climate Summit in Paris.
