Sport: PNG shock Ireland in T20 cricket qualifiers

A match-winning knock from Normanu Vanua has helped Papua New Guinea upset Ireland by two wickets to continue their unbeaten start to the World T20 cricket qualifiers in the UK.

Willie Gavera bagged 3 for 17 from his four overs as the Irish were restricted to 123 for 9 in Belfast.

PNG openers Tony Ura and Lega Siaka both fell for single figures but a run a ball 32 from Assad Vala helped steady the Barramundi's run-chase.

However, regular wickets continued to fall in the middle overs and John Reva's departure left the Barramundi's needing 31 runs from 19 deliveries, with only two wickets in hand.

Step up Norman Vanua, who smashed 28 not out from ten balls, including four sixes, to get the visitors home with seven balls to spare.

Papua New Guinea are second in Pool A, behind Ireland, but have a game in hand.

The top six teams from the qualifying tournament will earn direct entry to next year's World T20 in India.
