The Commonwealth was awarded hosting rights last year, having previously bid for the 2017 Mini Games, which are to take place in Vanuatu.

The President of the Northern Mariana Islands Amateur Sports Association, Michael White, is in Port Moresby, where the CMNI has 32 athletes competing in the 2015 Pacific Games.

He says PNG has set the bar very high for other nations and the commonwealth can't wait for its turn.

"We're pretty much all set for facilities, other than we need to build some toilet and shower blocks in the Games Village or Villages and we'd like to extend the grandstand in the main stadium. Other than that we're pretty well set."

Michael White says everyone is PNG has been very welcoming and they intend to be the same.
