Nauru opens new court facility

2:25 pm on 23 July 2015

There are hopes a newly opened court facility in Nauru will speed up the legal process on the island.

The facility includes a courtroom, judges chambers, a training room and a staff office.

The Chief Justice Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi says the new courts will allow them to deal with refugee cases.

At the opening the Minister for Justice and Border Control, David Adeang, also released the departments strategic plan.

He says a key part of the plan is improving public access to the courts and he says to this end the government has, in principle, agreed to provide legal aid services.

The New Zealand Government has funded the development of the justice sector's strategic plan while the court building was funded by Australia.
