1:54 pm on 24 July 2015

Fiji police say a senior officer will take the next available flight to investigate claims of police brutality on an island in the Lau Group.

There are reports a 40 year old father of three is in a serious condition after being allegedly beaten up by police officers on the island of Vanuabalavu over the weekend.

The Chief of Operations Rusiate Tudravu told FBC News it was a serious matter but he has called for patience and support from the community as the police carry out an investigation.

He says the officers in Vanuabalavu will be investigated to verify the allegation that has been made against them.

FBC reports the man, Anare Cama, and a few other friends from Mavana village are alleged to have been assaulted by police after a drinking party on Saturday.

They claim they were taken by the police to the Mualevu Police Post where they say they were assaulted.

The family then filed a complaint with police.
