Fiji Corrections Services has begun work building a new women's prison.

It is spending $US2.6 million dollars for the jail at Natabua in Lautoka.

It will house 48 inmates in what the Commissioner Corrections Services, Lieutenant Colonel Ifereimi Vasu, says will be a high standard facility.

He says it will mean women prisoners from the west will no longer have to travel to Suva to serve their sentences.
