Violence fuelled by homebrew in Marshalls outer islands

Two Marshall Islands men from remote atolls are facing charges in the High Court for a murder and a serious assault in separate incidents.

The driving factor in both assaults was homebrewed alcohol, according to police investigators.

Mili resident Waynold Daniel has been charged with murder, manslaughter, aggravated assault and assault with a dangerous weapon after the death of Dial Joab in late July.

In the other case, Robinson Joshua of Ailinglaplap Atoll was charged last week with aggravated assault and assault with a dangerous weapon.

He is charged with attacking his brother with a machete causing him serious bodily harm.

In both cases, the accused had been drinking 'yeast', the local home brew.
