Sport: Samoa footballers target further improvement

Samoa football captain Desmond Fa'aiuaso says the national team is already looking ahead to the next big challenge after winning the Oceania pre-qualifier title in Nuku'alofa.

On a dramatic final day of competition, Samoa thrashed hosts Tonga 3-0 before watching American Samoa upset Cook Island 2-0.

That left three teams level on six points but Samoa finished atop the standings thanks to a superior goal-difference - earning them a place at next year's Oceania Nations Cup.

Fa'aiuaso was a part of the Samoa team that finished last at the Nations Cup in Honiara in 2012 and says the team is determined to improve next time around.

"We're trying to put our federation up and move to the next level and trying to be in those higher competitions and stay there for as long as we can. Our federation back home they have a development squad and all the young ones. When we get back home we need to spend more time with our families and then after that we go back to work for the next round".
