Tonga consults community over cyber clampdown

Tonga's government is consulting the community over its plans to tighten young people's access to the internet.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs is looking at a ban on pornographic websites and selectively blocking social media websites such as Facebook.

The ministry's Acting Chief Executive 'Onetoto 'Anisi says confrontations and even deaths have been linked to young people sending abusive messages via social media.

"We first start blocking some of the websites and then we will see how the technical suppliers of internet can block the access of young people and our children to a number of other websites."

Mr 'Anisi says the government wants the regulations in place sooner rather than later but it first wants to hear the community's views on the proposals.
