The police in Samoa are hunting two prisoners who escaped from Tafaigata prison, one of them is suspected of attacking two women.

Escapee Lauitiiti Tualima is alleged to have broken into the accommodation of an Australian couple early last Thursday morning and raped the woman, after tying the man's hands.

The police spokesperson, Su'a Muli'aga Tiumalu, says the couple had been on holiday and were due to leave the country on the day of the attack.

Tualima is also suspected of breaking into the Faleolo International airport tower and attacking a female employee with a knife last Tuesday night.

The woman sustained injuries as a result.

Meanwhile, in a separate police case, a prisoner is suspected to have been involved in the death of a 49-year-old mother three weeks ago at Faleula.

No one has been arrested but police investigations are continuing.
