Sport: Guam footballers target away success

Guam football coach Gary White believes his squad is now better equipped to win away from home.

The Matao can return to top spot in their Football World Cup qualifying group with a win in Turkmenistan tomorrow.

The Matao are currently third in Group D in the second round of Asian qualifying, one point behind Iran and Oman.

They've won two and drawn one match on home soil but were thrashed 6-0 by Iran in their only away match to date.

Gary White says they've learnt from that experience and will be better for it.

"It's just that experience of being there and even against Iran we got better in the second half. It's just a question of making sure we stay focused and don't let the nerves get to the players because a lot of the players would never been in that position before, so they can now draw on that experience from the Iran game.

"We're hoping that the last four games will set us up nicely going up against Turkmenistan. We know it's not going to be easy, we know it's a tough place to go and we also know that Iran have been there and got a tie."

Mr White says they want to take back top spot in the group and the only way they can do that is to be aggressive and score goals.
