Bigeye tuna proceeds to finance fishermen's coop

Part of the proceeds of the Northern Marianas' bigeye tuna fishing quota is to be spent on a permanent building for the local fishermen's cooperative.

The new facility will provide the Saipan Fishermen's Association a place to unload and sell their catch, as well as to get discounted gas and ice to pack their fish.

Department of Lands and Natural Resources Secretary Richard Seman says construction will begin in mid-2016.

Last month, Govenor Eloy Inos struck a deal with Honolulu-based Quota Management, awarding it half of the CNMI's tuna quota for 2016.
