Law and order forum in Bougainville's Buin

A public forum is being held in Buin in South Bougainville today to counter continued lawlessness.

In the latest incident in the autonomous Papua New Guinea region, late last week three police were injured when they were set upon by locals who the police commander, Senior Sergeant John Popui, says were drunk.

He says his officers were trying to arrest two drunk men who were drinking in public when they were attacked.

New Dawn FM reports that the ABG police minister, Willie Masiu, then called a forum for today, asking local chiefs to attend and help address the law and order problems in Buin and the surrounding villages.

Last December, Mr Popui had threatened to shut down police services after their investigations of a violent attack were hampered by an unco-operative community.
