The Fiji government says it has asked the South African government to waive immunity for a diplomat involved in a fatal road accident earlier this month.
The corporate services manager at the South Africa High Commission, Theodorus Mostert, was involved in the accident that claimed the life of 26-year-old Ashneel Singh.
Mr Mostert was questioned and a blood-alcohol test was taken.
The Fiji government says the foreign ministry is working with the police and other relevant government agencies, including the High Commission of South Africa, to resolve the incident.
Under the provisions of the Vienna Convention, South Africa can waive diplomatic immunity.
Fiji's Police Commissioner Ben Groenewald says the questioning of Mr Mostert, which happened after the incident, is against the convention, and could be deemed inadmissible evidence in any future trial.
