Mary Chapman, who worked in the previous parliament before the coup, says due to the impartiality of civil servants, they should welcome both government and opposition MP.

She says civil servants should know what matters they can and can't share, but should faciliate a visit from any MP.

She says the position of the leader of the opposition is a constitutional one and she has concerns about the claims by the Attorney General that Ro Teimumu Kepa should have sought the Parliament's sanction before her trip.

"Normally the Parliamentary Secretary General, the Speaker doesn't have to give any approval, or the House, so I'm a bit confused as to why the leader of the opposition has to get approval."

Mary Chapman says the government should support such trips and not make them difficult.
