Pacific youth a focus for SPC conference

8:23 am on 30 October 2015

A dialogue on issues affecting youth is to be held as part of the biennial Conference of the Pacific Community in Niue.

The conference, starting over the weekend, is the key management meeting for the 26 member regional body.

The United Nations Secretary-General's Envoy for Youth, Jordan's Ahmad Alhendawi, will give the keynote address on overcoming barriers to implementing global policy on engaging youth in sustainable development.

Youth make up more than half of the Pacific population but there is a lack of targeted investment to respond to youth issues.

The dialogue will give an opportunity for political leaders, youth representatives and development partners to discuss strategies for increasing investment on a range of issues affecting Pacific youth.

These include non-communicable diseases, climate change, sexual reproductive health and rights and the employment and empowerment of girls and young women.
