US$37 million for Fiji peacekeeping

Fiji's overseas peacekeeping missions have been allocated US$37 million dollars in this year's budget.

The government says more than 1,000 personnel are deployed in UN peacekeeping operations.

The US$1.5 billion budget announced on Friday also includes US$130 million for the health sector, an increase of $5 million.

Education receives a boost of $14 million to $200 million.

The government has reduced duty on a raft of items and decreased sales tax from 15% to 9%.

But basic food items and other goods like rice, cooking oil, fish, flour, medicine and kerosene will no longer be exempt from the tax

The Fiji government expects the economy to grow by 3.5% in 2016.
