American Samoa shipyard to be upgraded

4:13 pm on 17 November 2015

The American Samoa Government shipyard at Satala will soon get an almost US$1 million upgrade.

The Acting CEO, Moefaauo Bill Emmsley, says the shipyard needs to accommodate larger vessels, especially purse seiners.

The funding for the improvement project totals $US940,000.

Moefaauo says they are waiting for the notice to proceed.

He says there's no need to hire off-island help, as there are enough people on hand at the shipyard to tackle the necessary work.

The upgrade comes as purse seiners are moving away from American Samoa due to the restriction on nearby fishing grounds.
