Fiji opposition alarmed at threats

12:10 pm on 30 November 2015

Fiji's opposition leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa, says she will call a special meeting today after opposition members faced death threats through social media.

According to the Fiji Times, a local man stated that he could act as a suicide bomber and make a bomb to destroy people who create political unrest.

The acting Police Commissioner, Sitiveni Qiliho, has appealed to the public to control their emotions because it could create unnecessary fear.

He says if the opposition makes a formal complaint, police will investigate.

Last week, the acting police commissioner said police had the identities of those who were allegedly plotting to destabilise government.

An internet cafe owner in Lautoka said he found the plot to kill all MPs on a computer and subsequently alerted the police.

He says he was then beaten by police and taken to hospital where he was guarded by the military.

Brigadier Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho said last week police had not yet identified the assailants.
