Cooks Red Cross officer sentenced for theft

2:14 pm on 9 December 2015

The former financial officer of the Cook Islands Red Cross has been placed on 24 months probation and charged with theft for pocketing more than US$21,000 of the charity's funds.

The officer, Twin Ingaua, must also attend counselling, and is not allowed to leave the Cook Islands during her probation period without consent from the court.

Ingaua has paid back the money to the charity.

A review of finances in early 2014 revealed that Ingaua had misappropriated Society funds.

The Red Cross' Secretary General Fine Tuitupou-Arnold said earlier this year the Red Cross had unfortunately relied too heavily on personal trust in the past.

A Red Cross representative says they were glad the court case was finally over, and the team looked forward to a fresh start for the Society.
