2:52 pm on 21 December 2015

A government minister in Nauru may be charged with manslaughter following a fatal road accident.

Batuki Haulangi was travelling on a motorbike with his wife, when they were struck from behind, allegedly by a speeding utility vehicle, driven by the Health Minister Valdon Dowiyogo.

Mr Haulangi died and his wife is in hospital in intensive care.

The accident is understood to have happened close to the government offices at Yaren.

Witnesses say the ambulance broke down on the way to the scene, causing a 45-minute delay.

Our source says the minister was taken directly from the scene to the police station and then bailed at court the next morning.
